Aecon Group Inc., in a three way partnership with AtkinsRéalis, has been awarded a major contract by Ontario Energy Era (OPG) for the refurbishment of 4 items on the Pickering Nuclear Producing Station. This venture, valued at roughly $2.1 billion, marks a vital step in Ontario’s plan to safe reasonably priced and clear vitality whereas creating hundreds of jobs.

“This contract award builds on the success of our joint venture on the Darlington Refurbishment Project and signifies OPG’s continued confidence in our team to refurbish their reactor fleet on-time, within budget and with an unwavering commitment to safety and quality,” Aecon Group’s president and CEO Jean-Louis Servranckx, stated in an announcement final Thursday (Jan. 23).

The refurbishment venture will deal with extending the operational lifetime of Pickering’s “B” items (Models 5 to eight), making certain the continued manufacturing of over 2,000 megawatts of electrical energy – sufficient to energy roughly two million houses.

“Refurbishing Pickering secures decades more of the low-carbon, reliable baseload electricity Ontario needs to meet forecasted soaring demand,” stated OPG’s president and CEO Nicolle Butcher

The venture is anticipated to generate hundreds of jobs throughout the province and contribute $19.4 billion to Ontario’s GDP over 11 years.

“Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is focused on delivering affordable energy, while we stand firm against the federal carbon tax. This refurbishment would protect those good paying jobs and provide the affordable and reliable power our province will need for decades to come,” stated Stephen Lecce, Minister of Vitality and Electrification.

The refurbishment plan aligns with Ontario’s broader Inexpensive Vitality Future technique, which incorporates:

Creating a complete vitality plan that considers all vitality sources.
Selling clear and reasonably priced nuclear energy by way of varied initiatives, together with pre-development work at Bruce Energy, small modular reactors at Darlington, and exploring new nuclear vitality era in Port Hope.
Investing in new transmission infrastructure to assist job creation and clear vitality initiatives.
Implementing vitality effectivity packages to assist households and companies cut back electrical energy utilization and prices.

The Pickering refurbishment venture is topic to regulatory approval by the Canadian Nuclear Security Fee (CNSC).
