A man facing second-degree murder charges in Peterborough and Oshawa turned himself in to the Peterborough Police on Friday afternoon.

Michael Watterman, 44, who has been reported living in both Oshawa and Peterborough, surrendered after officers from the Emergency Response Unit learned he was nearby and went to a home at Dalhousie Street and Aylmer Street around 3 p. m. on Friday.

The police called out to him, and he “exited the residence and surrendered to police,” according to reports.

Watterman is currently held in custody and is set to appear in court during the Weekend and Statutory Holiday session on Saturday.

He was wanted for second-degree murder related to the death of a 33-year-old man in Peterborough on December 6.

Following that incident, officers from the Peterborough Police Investigative Services Unit along with members of the Belleville Police Tactical Team arrested 28-year-old Peter Pople from Peterborough in Belleville. He was charged with second-degree murder just 12 days after the homicide, followed by an arrest of 29-year-old Kaya Coughlin later that same day in Peterborough.

A warrant for Watterman’s arrest was issued that same day. Five days later, Durham Police also issued a warrant for him after Jeremy Russell, 44, was fatally stabbed in Oshawa; this marked the ninth homicide reported this year in Durham Region.

The police responded to a 9-1-1 call early Tuesday morning on Park Road, north of John Street, where a passerby found Russell suffering from several stab wounds. He was transported to a trauma center in Toronto but succumbed to his injuries there.

Nicholas Robbins, 33, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with second-degree murder. He is being held pending a bail hearing.

Police confirmed that Watterman, Robbins, and Russell were all known to each other.
