Six local organizations in Peterborough-Kawartha are set to receive over $116,000 from the province to help seniors remain active, connected, and safe within their communities.

On Thursday, Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith announced that these organizations will share a total of $116,196 through Ontario’s Seniors Community Grants program.

The City of Peterborough will get almost $25,000 to enhance its ‘Be Prepared’ program, which offers seniors crucial information about fraud prevention, emergency readiness, severe weather safety, and intimate partner or family violence.

The Alzheimer Society of Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland and Haliburton is receiving more than $24,000 to support its Social and Night Out Program. This initiative aims to create chances for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers and families to bond over shared meals and social events.

Mapleridge Recreation Centre has been granted over $24,500 for a digital literacy program designed to teach seniors how to use technology safely. This includes recognizing scams and accessing online services effectively.

Community Care Peterborough will receive $24,500 for the second phase of its Senior Connectors program. This program employs trained volunteers who assist older adults in finding local services while reducing feelings of isolation.

The Douro-Dummer Township Public Library Board is getting nearly $18,000 to expand its Learning Commons. Meanwhile, St. Joseph’s at Fleming will receive $2,100 to organize accessible community outings for residents in long-term care.

“Seniors have built the vibrant, close-knit communities we enjoy today, and ensuring they have access to programs that keep them active, safe and connected is a top priority,” Smith said.

Ontario is putting up to $7 million this year into supporting over 320 Seniors Community Grants throughout the province.
