Siemens Canada has shared its intention to “wind down” manufacturing at its Peterborough plant, a decision that the company says will affect around 160 jobs.

In a news release on Wednesday, the tech firm announced that it will transfer the production of its measurement intelligence technologies equipment to an existing facility in Concord, Ont., by September 2027.

While approximately 160 positions will be lost in Peterborough, Siemens mentioned that about 70 new roles will be created at the Concord site due to this transition.

“Siemens understands the impact this action has on employees and the local Peterborough community, and the company is dedicated to managing this process with transparency and respect,” the news release notes. “Siemens is committed to supporting employees who are affected and will implement a comprehensive support program to assist employees during this period of change.”

Jobs related to other business functions at the Peterborough plant, such as product management and research and development teams, won’t be affected by this shift.

In their announcement, they indicated that this change is essential for Siemens’ industrial automation division to become “more competitive in a challenging market environment with increased competitive pressure.”

“The optimization and consolidation help to position the Canadian operations for growth by allowing for more synergies across its local and global supply chains and enabling the organization to respond more quickly to customer and market demands,” the release notes.
