Almost one hundred individuals gathered outside the office of Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith on Monday afternoon, joining a grassroots movement across the province to oppose Bill 5. Bill 5 is also referred to as the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act. Demonstrators held signs and lined Chemong Road, receiving continuous honks of encouragement from vehicles passing by. The Ford government claims that the bill would expedite approvals for significant economic projects in response to threats from U. S. tariffs. However, critics, including First Nations and environmental organizations, caution that it could overlook labor and environmental regulations and restrict Indigenous consultations. The provincial government plans to pass the bill before the legislature adjourns on June 5.
