The president of Algonquin College announced that the school’s board of directors will be asked to consider closing its campus in Perth, Ont., in 2026 due to financial issues.

In a statement released Thursday evening, Claude Brulé mentioned that the college is facing losses of $32 million a year because of the federal government’s limits on international study permits and the province’s restrictions on tuition fees.

Algonquin was aiming to enroll around 7,450 international students, but with those limitations, it would only be able to accept about 5,000 students, Brulé explained. He didn’t provide a specific timeline for these changes.

The board will discuss the potential campus closure at a meeting scheduled for Feb. 24, he said. If approved, classes would conclude in Perth at the end of the spring term in 2026 and shift to Algonquin’s Ottawa campus.

We speak to Algonquin College’s president about proposed plans to close its Perth campus and what it means for the campus’s programs.

Brulé stated that a comprehensive review began last fall with “a focus on minimizing impacts on employees and learners while maintaining our commitment to providing exceptional learning experiences for years to come.”

“These are the most challenging fiscal times in the College’s history,” he wrote.

The campus located on the eastern edge of Perth currently serves about 350 students, according to college reports. It was founded in the 1960s and saw its current building open in 2011.

Algonquin highlights its heritage trades programs aimed at preserving and restoring historic spaces, especially involving woodwork. It also offers diplomas in agriculture and nursing.

Algonquin College has another campus located in Pembroke as well.
