MPP David Piccini and Ontario’s Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Response Jill Dunlop recently visited Otonabee-South Monaghan to witness how Ontario’s investments are enhancing community safety and readiness for emergencies.

To ensure the safety of Ontarians, the government is allocating up to $649,000 for ice storm relief in Northumberland-Peterborough South. This funding is part of Ontario’s $90 million Municipal Ice Storm Assistance program and will assist with clean-up and emergency response costs stemming from a severe winter storm on March 28, 2025.

“Rural areas like ours were hit hard by the March 2025 ice storm,” said David Piccini, Member of Provincial Parliament for Northumberland-Peterborough South. “Our government stands firm in its commitment to support rural Ontario during tough times. I am incredibly proud of how our community came together during the storm. The Municipal Ice Storm Assistance program will help municipalities recover and rebuild from the damage, making us more resilient.”

The storm on March 28, 2025, caused extensive damage, leaving nearly 400,000 homes and businesses without electricity throughout central and eastern Ontario. In parts of Northumberland-Peterborough South, thousands of residents experienced power outages. The heavy ice accumulation on trees led to falling trees that damaged homes and vehicles while blocking roads with downed power lines.

The following municipalities are receiving funding:
**all costs are after cost-sharing
Alnwick/Haldimand 31,000

Asphodel-Norwood 181,000

Cramahe 61,000

Otonabee-South

Monaghan 176,000

Township of Hamilton 33,000

Trent Hills 167,000
“Our government will always protect Ontario in times of need,” stated Rob Flack, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “The aid being announced today will help safeguard local jobs and support Northumberland-Peterborough South as it rebuilds – stronger than before.”

In June 2025, the Ontario government introduced the Municipal Ice Storm Assistance program along with a Business Ice Storm Assistance program to aid communities affected by the storm.

QUICK FACTS
• The province’s Business Ice Storm Assistance program is offering up to $5 million for small businesses, small farms and non-profit organizations to help with clean-up efforts and essential repairs not covered by insurance.

QUOTES

“As a smaller rural municipality managing over 200km of roads, this grant significantly helps fund our operation crew’s swift work in clearing fallen tree limbs and debris. The job was done quickly ensuring resident safety while allowing electrical services to resume promptly.”
– Mandy Martin, Mayor, Township of Cramahe.

“The Township of Otonabee-South Monaghan sincerely thanks MPP David Piccini and Premier Ford for the provincial funding support of $176,000 through the MISA program to assist with clean-up expenses related to the March 2025 ice storm. This extreme weather event placed considerable pressure on our staff resources as well as our budget for 2025; we are still working towards recovery. This funding will greatly aid those efforts.
Once again, Ontario has shown it understands the challenges faced by small rural municipalities like ours.”
