A local teen is feeling thankful after being picked in this year’s Ontario Hockey League (OHL) draft.

“I feel like the main reason for my development was my coaching for the last three years. Just an amazing all-around coach who pushed me to be my best,” Daniel Tout, 16, said of his Huron Perth Lakers coach, former NHL forward Krys Barch. “He deserves a lot of gratitude for all that he’s done for me and for the rest of the boys, as well.”
A Grade 10 student at Kincardine District Senior School (KDSS), Tout was chosen by the Peterborough Petes in the sixth round, at 104th overall, during the online OHL Priority Selection held on April 11 and 12.
Before the draft, the defenceman said he didn’t have any particular expectations.
“Expectations get you disappointed, but I was really hoping to get drafted, go as early as I can, and set standards for myself. Not expectations – standards, so that if I do get drafted, I’ll keep myself up to those standards,” he said.

Tout mentioned he was in Kincardine with his parents and grandparents when he found out he had been selected by the Petes.
“I think they were really excited that they get to spend a little bit less money and drive a little less,” Tout joked about his family’s reaction.
“But seriously, they were super excited. We were at my grandparents’ house, and we had the draft up on the TV, and we had it up on our phones as well because the phones were a little bit faster than the TV. It was an awesome experience being there and getting drafted with my family there,” he said, adding that he later spoke to his Lakers coaches to hear their thoughts.
“They said they were super proud I got drafted and of all the work I put in,” he said.
Tout expressed feeling “relieved” when he finally saw his name appear during the draft.

“That’s when stress had gone away and then right after that stress picked right back up because I knew I had to get right back to work for Petes camp,” he shared. “You have to make their team even after you were drafted. They pick you to come try out for their team and if they cut you then you’re a free agent; you can go anywhere… They get first say.”
Tout noted that even if he’s not selected for this season’s team he’ll likely stay connected with them while aiming to play eventually.
“It’s always good to commit to a team,” he explained.
“If they don’t have you make their team then you can always play for their affiliate. They can watch how you develop over time before hopefully playing for them next season. But technically speaking I’d be considered a free agent.”
