Provincial police say they are looking into a tragic incident that resulted in three fatalities and injuries after a crash involving multiple vehicles in Kawartha Lakes, Ont.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Highway 7 and New Heights Road on Saturday at 6 p. m. due to reports of a serious accident that included a passenger vehicle and four motorcycles.

The driver of the passenger vehicle, an 18-year-old man from Peterborough, Ont., was found dead at the scene.

One of the motorcyclists, a 72-year-old man from Dunchurch, Ont., was also pronounced dead at the scene.

A second motorcyclist, a 65-year-old man from Barrie, Ont., suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Toronto, where he later died.

A third motorcyclist, a 30-year-old man from Sudbury, Ont., was initially treated at a local hospital for his injuries before being transferred to a Toronto-area hospital. A fourth motorcyclist, a 36-year-old man from Sudbury, received treatment on-site and was released shortly after.

OPP Const. Jacob Daynes informed CBC Toronto on Sunday that the road remained closed for an extended period while they conducted their investigation. The cause of the accident is still under examination.

“We’re still undetermined as to which direction each was going,” Daynes said. “As the days go on, we’re hoping that we’ll learn more about what happened.”

He mentioned that it appeared the motorcyclists were likely riding together but their exact relationship remains unclear.

“The takeaway from all this is if we could slow down,” Daynes said. “Visibility is one of our biggest, [most] important things that we got to look at while we’re driving on roadways so that we can keep an eye out for everyone that’s on the road.”

Police are urging anyone with information regarding this incident to reach out to them.
