A motorcyclist has died following a collision with a farm tractor north of Listowel.
Emergency services responded to the incident on Perth Line 88, located between Road 167 and Road 171, around 7 p. m. on Thursday.
The 29-year-old rider was declared dead at the scene. The identity of the individual has not been disclosed. The tractor driver suffered no injuries.
This accident led to a closure of that section of Perth Line 88 for just over seven hours, with it reopening shortly after 2 a. m. on Friday.
Officers from the West Region OPP traffic management and enforcement team are working alongside Perth OPP officers as part of their ongoing investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash-cam footage is encouraged to contact police at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
This tragic event occurred just hours before one of Ontario’s largest motorcycle gatherings – the Friday the 13th event in Port Dover, where tens of thousands of bikers from across North America gather in the lakeside town.
The OPP have reminded both motorcyclists and other road users to share the road responsibly and prioritize safety.
In a video shared on social media, Sergeant Ed Sanchuk highlighted some tips for drivers to help avoid collisions while driving.
“Make sure you are double checking your blind spots, signalling your turns, leaving enough time, room and distance between you and other vehicles and motorcycles,” Sanchuk said. “For motorcyclists, make sure you are visible to the motoring public. Please, no lane splitting or aggressive driving because I can assure you right now that if you’re involved in a crash, a lot of time motorcycle operators suffer life-altering or life-ending injuries.”
The OPP stated that with an expected increase in motorcycle traffic over the weekend, they will enhance their presence to focus on traffic safety.
