A 44-year-old man from Ottawa has lost his life after being struck by a vehicle while a tow truck driver was attempting to pull his minivan out of the snow.

The incident took place just before 1 a. m. Saturday on Highway 7, between Highway 511 and Glen Tay Road, west of Perth, Ont.

The minivan had gotten stuck in a snowy ditch Friday night, and a tow truck was on-site trying to get it out, according to the Ontario Provincial Police in a news release.

During this process, the man was standing next to his minivan when he was hit by an eastbound car, OPP reported.

He was transported to an Ottawa hospital but unfortunately was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

The vehicle also collided with the tow truck; however, its driver did not sustain any injuries. There were no injuries reported for anyone inside the car either.

Highway 7 reopened by mid-Saturday morning.
