A tragic four-vehicle accident early Friday morning resulted in the deaths of two individuals and led to the closure of Highway 7 between Perth and Maberly, as reported by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). The highway was reopened later on Friday afternoon.

According to a news release from OPP, emergency services arrived at the scene of the crash near Maberly just after 3 a. m.

Police informed CBC that a 59-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man from Ottawa, who were riding in an SUV, lost their lives at the scene.

Four additional individuals were injured in the incident, including two who sustained critical injuries and were taken to the hospital. The others had minor injuries.

Involved in the collision were two transport trucks and a pickup truck, OPP stated. Fortunately, none of those injured were children.

While police mentioned that an investigation is still underway, they indicated that the vehicles were heading in different directions.

“It appears that the westbound [pickup] truck may have initially had a collision with the eastbound transport truck,” OPP Const. Corey Noonan told CBC.

Collision reconstructionists were present at the scene attempting to determine what caused this tragic event, he said.
