The Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged a driver involved in an accident on Highway 60 after stopping for a turtle crossing.
On June 10, 2026 around 6 p. m., officers responded to a two-vehicle crash that led to a section of Highway 60 being closed in North Algona-Wilberforce Township. An investigation revealed that an eastbound vehicle slowed down or halted on the road for a turtle crossing.
A car traveling behind the stopped vehicle couldn’t slow down in time and collided with it from behind. The highway remained closed for several hours to facilitate an investigation and cleanup following the accident.
The driver from Ottawa has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act.
The OPP advises drivers that stopping in live traffic lanes poses significant risks to themselves and others. If you encounter wildlife on the road, do not stop in traffic lanes. Contact police if you need assistance.
