Porter Airlines will stop its brief service from Sudbury to Ottawa in September and will exit northern Ontario’s largest city after 15 years.

Christopher Pollesel, the director of commercial development and passenger experience at Sudbury Airport, confirmed to that the airline will no longer operate there.

In May, Porter discontinued its Sudbury to Toronto route.

Porter spokesperson Robyn van Teunenbroek shared with via email that the route was canceled because the market had changed since the pandemic, with more people opting to drive between both cities or choosing virtual meetings over business travel instead.

“We repositioned service to Ottawa from Toronto City in May, providing non-stop access to the nation’s capital and access to a greater range of connecting flights across our North American network,” the email said.

“We were hopeful it would lead to stronger performance, however, the results have not improved.”

Van Teunenbroek also confirmed that the last Porter flight out of Sudbury will take place on Sept. 7.

The airline still serves northern Ontario cities like Sault Ste. Marie and Timmins with flights heading to Toronto.

Quebec-based Propair has informed that it is currently discussing plans to add services from Sudbury to Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. The airline already offers flights from Sudbury to Ottawa.
