Top amateur athletes in Canada understand the journey it takes to reach elite competition levels.
At the highest level, you find the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. Just below that, each sport has its World Cup events, whether they occur annually or are part of a series throughout the season.
There are also international and invitational contests that give young athletes a chance to test their skills and aim for new achievements.
On a national scale, each sport holds its championships, serving various purposes and sometimes featuring competitions against other countries to challenge Canada’s rising stars.
At the grassroots level, provincial events like annual championships take place alongside a series of competitions that create a season-long circuit. The Ontario Games occur every two years-summer games in even years and winter games in odd years.
The latest Ontario Summer Games took place this past holiday weekend in the Waterloo Region, where over 4,000 athletes aged 12 to 18 competed in 23 sports across 19 venues spanning Waterloo, Kitchener, Cambridge, and nearby townships.
While some results from this four-day multi-sport event are still pending on the official website, one thing is clear: Ottawa’s athletes have shown they can win medals that inspire them to reach higher levels of competition.
As of Wednesday, participants connected with Ottawa-from various teams including Eastern Ontario Division and Ottawa Valley Golf Association-achieved a remarkable total of 140 medals.
Most medals were won in canoe-kayak sprint events which had intense matchups with paddlers from Western Ontario Division as well as athletics, wushu, and cycling.
The Eastern Ontario Division stood out with 73 medals overall and showed strength across all categories including men’s and women’s canoeing and kayaking along with special Olympics classes.
Nathan Goodall excelled at his regatta by winning gold medals in all six of his individual races as well as crew boat finals. He was fastest in men’s single canoe events over both 500 meters and 5,000 meters while also securing first-place finishes alongside Devlin Payne in C2 mixed 500 meters; Kinsley Daniels in C2 mixed 500 meters; John Moorewood in C2 1,000 meters; plus being part of IC4 winning team for 500-meter event.
Payne grabbed three medals himself including gold for IC4 race at distance of 500 meters along with silver achieved together with Jane Schlosser during their C2 mixed race.
Kayaker Mason Cobb earned five medals too-taking home golds from K2 mixed race (with Liv Hazzan) covering distance of 500 meters along with solo gold (K1) finishing at just under two hundred meters. His silver victories came through efforts paired with Hugo Dumont over distances including K2 at both five hundred & one thousand meter races plus another K4 event.
Seely managed to achieve five-medal success on his own having secured silver during K4’s shorter fifty kilometer run alongside bronzes achieved through performances put forth within dual kayak series varying between standard distances involved here ranging largely around either five hundred or fifteen hundred meter challenges occurring here.
Daniels tallied up her wins among women’s canoe category by capturing maximum possible slots available within this division while pairing up similarly successful partners such as Masson who matched her side-by-side competing effectively throughout varied lengths thereby resulting ultimately into shared honors being awarded later on after completion period passed successfully thereafter!
Meanwhile Hazzan netted three additional golds recorded notably under women’s kayak divisions involving races conducted across distances varying through completed circuits entailing kilometers represented initially starting initially into what appeared fairly manageable compared against earlier obstacles faced eventually leading towards finalizing overall standings reached before conclusion point arrived subsequently afterwards…
