Tragic Events Unfold in Eastern Ontario

New information is coming to light about the tragic double murder of two young brothers in south Ottawa, an explosion at their father’s dental office located an hour away, and the father’s suicide in his vehicle at a carpool lot situated between the two locations.

The father is thought to have taken the lives of his two boys in their townhouse in Findlay Creek, a neighborhood in south Ottawa, during the late hours as Sunday turned into Monday, according to what has learned.

This 40-year-old man was under active probation for previously threatening his ex-wife, who is also the boys’ mother, back in 2024, based on court documents from Ottawa.

CBC has chosen not to identify the father or the two victims-aged seven and twelve-to safeguard the privacy of their surviving family members.

Dental office firebombed

Around 2 a. m. Monday on a major road in Iroquois, Ont., near the St. Lawrence River, he then set fire to his dental practice named Road 2 Dentistry using gasoline cans. Local residents told that they awoke to an explosion and noticed gas cans nearby.

The landlord, Marcin Kozniewski, informed CBC that the father had signed a ten-year lease for that space within a new mixed-use building which also includes 24 residential units and a gym that operates around-the-clock.

No injuries were reported due to the blast or subsequent fire; however, one of the affected residential units is now uninhabitable according to Kozniewski.

According to records from the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario, he was practicing dentistry both at his Iroquois office and another location in Ottawa. His corporate address points back to his home in Findlay Creek where he lived with his children before this incident occurred.

Police were alerted Monday morning when a coworker reached out after hearing about the explosion. After failing to contact him by phone, this coworker drove over to check on him at home.

Found guilty 2 months ago

Court records indicate that he was found guilty earlier this year in Ottawa’s Ontario Court of Justice for threatening bodily harm towards his ex-wife via an email dated January 21st, 2024.

He received a conditional discharge on April 10th this year which meant he would avoid having a criminal record if he complied with terms outlined in a one-year probation order. Another charge related to threats made toward another individual through email on that same day was dropped following a request from Crown prosecutors.

The conditions of his probation included no communication with his ex-wife unless it was pre-approved by her or managed through third parties or court orders for arranging contact with their children.

Court documents from September 2024 show that he had custody rights every other weekend as per family court arrangements regarding parenting time with his children.

Found dead in vehicle

The father was discovered deceased inside his vehicle early Monday morning at a carpool lot north of Kemptville, Ont., roughly 55 kilometers south of Ottawa and midway between where he worked and where he lived.

No charges will be filed since he’s considered the sole suspect; however, investigators from Ottawa’s homicide unit will still carry out a thorough inquiry into what happened.

“As a father, it’s shocking to hear this kind of news. It’s heartbreaking; it’s tragic,” stated Mayor Mark Sutcliffe on Tuesday. “It’s hard to believe that something like this could happen here among us. My thoughts are with all those close to this family.”

“This should be a time when kids enjoy life outside and engage with their community; it’s just so tragic-so senseless-and our community remains completely stunned,” added Coun. Steve Desroches who represents Findlay Creek area residents.
