The City of Ottawa has shut down the Lalande Conservation Park in the Orléans area following a coyote attack on a teenager last week.

Coun. Catherine Kitts mentioned that the incident took place on June 3. CHEO, the children’s hospital in Ottawa, confirmed that a boy was treated for injuries consistent with being attacked by a coyote.

The city stated that staff had been keeping an eye on an active coyote den nearby and were investigating the report to decide on further actions.

They mentioned they have been closing off paths, putting up warning signs, contacting residents, and increasing bylaw patrols in the vicinity.

On Wednesday, the city announced it closed the park on Tuesday and is discussing with the province about getting permission to relocate the coyotes.

The city indicated it’s preparing backup plans with experts if relocation isn’t allowed. In the meantime, they’ve set up trail cameras and sent staff to inform people to steer clear of the area.

“Protecting public safety remains the City’s priority as it responds to a complex situation in a residential area where people, pets and wildlife are in close proximity,” it said.

Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources told on Tuesday that “relocating coyotes is generally ineffective and can create additional risks, including the spread of disease to new populations.”

Coyotes have also been known to travel several hundred kilometres back to their home territory, it said.

City monitors coyote den after attack in Orléans

The City of Ottawa is advising residents to be cautious at Lalande Conservation Park following a teenage boy’s encounter with a coyote last week. David Fraser has more details.

City advice

The city said general sightings of coyotes can be reported to 311 so they can be tracked. If any wild animal poses a threat to public safety, residents should call 911.

The city recommends that residents heed warning signs and access restrictions while avoiding wooded areas after dark.

The city encourages residents to follow these precautions when encountering “aggressive wildlife”:

Never approach or attempt to touch the animal. Do not turn your back or run from the animal. Back away slowly while remaining calm. Stand tall, wave your arms, and make loud noises. Carry a flashlight when walking at night.

If anyone suffers scratches or bites from a wild animal that breaks skin, they should contact Ottawa Public Health as advised by the city.
