Two women lost their lives after a two-vehicle crash on Highway 401 close to Gananoque, Ont., as reported by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

Emergency responders arrived at the scene in the westbound lanes shortly after 12:30 a. m., according to a police press release issued later that morning.

The OPP stated that their initial investigation suggests a transport truck was parked with safety cones out on the right shoulder when it was hit by a passenger vehicle.

The two women in the passenger car, aged 47 and 73, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of their vehicle sustained no serious injuries but was taken to the hospital for evaluation, police noted.

The deceased women were from the Greater Toronto Area, OPP confirmed.

The transport truck driver did not report any injuries and wasn’t taken to the hospital, according to police.

OPP is urging anyone who witnessed the crash or may have dash camera footage of the area to reach out to Leeds County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
