Environment Canada put out two tornado warnings in different areas of eastern Ontario between 2 and 3 p. m. on Thursday.

In particular, Environment Canada identified Glen Robertson, Ont., close to the Quebec border as one area at risk for a tornado, along with Morton, Ont., which is located north of Gananoque.

No immediate reports of damage, injuries, or widespread outages were made by municipal officials in the affected areas.

has not noted any significant damage in places like Maxville and Alexandria, where residents reported heavy rain.

People living in the impacted areas were advised to take shelter in a basement or an interior room away from windows or to lie down in a low spot.

The warnings were red, which is the highest level on Environment Canada’s three-colour scale, signaling life-threatening weather that could cause severe disruption.

A warning is issued when there’s been a tornado sighting reported or when there’s enough evidence suggesting one might occur soon.

WATCH | Environment Canada meteorologist Peter Kimbell explain the tornado risk:

Environment Canada provides update on Tornado warnings in eastern Ontario

Environment Canada has lifted a red tornado warning for the Gananoque, Ont., area east of Kingston. This was the second tornado warning issued between 2 and 3 p. m. for eastern Ontario following an earlier red tornado warning east of Ottawa affecting communities like Clarence-Rockland, Russell, and Hawkesbury.

A risk of tornadoes and strong winds persisted for several hours afterward across much of the rest of the region.

The severe thunderstorm watches and warnings were yellow, indicating the lowest threat level on their scale.
