A 17-year-old has been arrested and faces multiple impaired driving charges after being discovered asleep in a running vehicle with the gearshift in drive early this morning in Oshawa.
Durham Regional Police responded to reports of an impaired driver shortly before 3:30 a.m. near Rossland Road East and Harmony Road North.
According to police, the teen was found unresponsive in the driver’s seat of his vehicle with the engine turned on and the transmission in drive. However, it is unknown if the vehicle was moving.
Fortunately, officers were able to turn the vehicle off and wake up the driver.
The teen underwent two breathalyzer tests, recording results of 149 mg and 139 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
In Ontario, the legal limit for driving is 80 mg per 100 ml, meaning the driver’s blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit.
The driver has been charged with several impaired driving offences including driving a vehicle with an open container of liquor.
In addition, his driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for a week.
Authorities have not revealed the driver’s identity as it is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
