The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that a Durham Regional Police officer committed a criminal offence during a police-involved shooting in Oshawa.

Authorities responded to reports of a man experiencing a mental health crisis in the vicinity of Bloor Street East and Simcoe Street South on January 18.

After attempts to negotiate, the man lunged at an officer with a knife.

In response to the threat, one officer deployed a taser while another discharged their firearm three times.

An officer sustained an injury to their arm, and the assailant was shot in the stomach.

Both the injured police officer and the man received treatment for serious injuries at a hospital.

SIU Director Martino concluded that the man seemed intent on harming the officer with his knife, posing a significant risk to their safety.

Martino noted that regarding the injuries sustained by the police officer, they stated they were unaware that another officer was positioned behind the man wielding the knife.

This account was corroborated by body camera footage.
