The city of Oshawa is excited to share that the Durham Region Innovation and Vehicle Ecosystem (DRIVE) has been chosen as one of the nine Regional Technology Development Sites (RTDS) under the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN).
This week, the city and its partners revealed the provincial funding for DRIVE at Ontario Tech University’s Automotive Centre of Excellence.
The Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) will contribute up to $2 million to DRIVE, enabling small and medium-sized businesses to access specialized equipment, advanced testing facilities, capital opportunities, and advisory support aimed at advancing automotive technologies and smart mobility solutions.
<p These investments put Oshawa and Durham Region in a leading position in next-generation mobility, advanced manufacturing, and smart transportation innovation.
“The City of Oshawa and Durham Region are at the forefront of Canada’s mobility transformation, and OVIN’s support for DRIVE is a powerful endorsement of the region’s strengths,” said Mayor Dan Carter, City of Oshawa. “By bringing together industry, academia and government, DRIVE is helping entrepreneurs accelerate innovation in electric and smart mobility, advanced manufacturing, rail, AI, cybersecurity, micro mobility – areas where Durham already excels.”
In addition to this funding, DRIVE has secured over $2.4 million from industry investments along with more than $2.5 million from broader public sector supports. This includes access to municipal pilot opportunities for real-world demonstration zones, mentorship programs, workspace solutions as well as acceleration support. Altogether this totals nearly $7 million in investment.
DRIVE is spearheaded by the City of Oshawa in collaboration with Ontario Tech University and receives backing from partners such as ACE Climatic Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel, Brilliant Catalyst, 1855 Technology Accelerator, the Region of Durham, and the Town of Whitby.
