Housing Durham is hosting a drop-in open house later this month to share updates and gather feedback from the community regarding the redevelopment of its property on Malaga Road in Oshawa.
The event will be held on Wednesday, May 27, from 5 to 7 p. m. at the South Oshawa Community Centre, located at 1455 Cedar Street. Residents, business owners, and other community members are encouraged to come out to learn more about the proposal, ask questions, and see how the project is progressing.
This redevelopment is part of a larger initiative that was approved by Durham Regional Council in 2022 when it passed a resolution identifying Housing Durham properties for revitalization. The goal of this program is to increase the supply of affordable housing while also creating mixed-income communities that feature both rent-geared-to-income and market rental homes.
The Region of Durham states that this approach aims to provide more high-quality affordable housing while fostering vibrant, diverse, and healthy neighborhoods. It also seeks to offer various housing options for different needs along with modernized buildings, improved sustainability features, and stronger community ties.
The site on Malaga Road spans 4.7 acres at the corner of Oxford Street and Malaga Road in Oshawa and currently contains 65 townhouse units that are set to be replaced. It’s conveniently located near Cordova Valley Park and Community Centre as well as within walking distance of Oshawa Creek and the Joseph Kolodzie Bike Trail.
The proposed plan involves replacing the existing housing with around 439 new units across two mid-rise apartment buildings alongside stacked and back-to-back townhouses. These units would range from one to four bedrooms, incorporating a mix of housing types along with indoor and outdoor amenity spaces, universal accessibility features, and enhanced environmental performance standards.
An official plan amendment and site plan approval from the City of Oshawa will be necessary before construction can begin. If everything goes according to plan, construction could start in 2028.
