Lloyd Robertson, a well-respected figure in Canadian broadcasting who reported the news with a calm and steady presence for over 40 years as the anchor for CTV and CBC’s main news programs, has passed away. He was 92.
CTV was the first to report his passing, which was later confirmed by a family member to .
Robertson retired as the anchor of CTV National News in 2011 after a remarkable 35 years with the network, having transitioned from CBC in a move that transformed Canadian television news. Prior to that, he anchored CBC’s The National for six years.
“Someone came along with this … on my terms, in my life at precisely the right moment, and it was irresistible. I couldn’t turn it down,” he shared with CBC’s Take 30 shortly after accepting the job offer in 1976.
During his time at CTV, Robertson played a key role in covering 11 federal elections, three Olympic Games hosted by Canada, and two Quebec referendums. He also reported on significant tragedies such as the Air India bombing in 1985, the Montreal massacre in 1989, and the September 11 attacks. Additionally, he helped tell inspiring stories like Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope.

Robertson often expressed how much he enjoyed being involved in major events shaping Canada and beyond; however, his on-air demeanor was famously described as “self-effacing and lacking in the watch-me swagger of most news anchors,” according to John Doyle from Globe and Mail.
Henry Kowalski, former CTV news chief remarked about him saying that “he was not just a fine journalist but a fine person” while describing Robertson as “the guy with the smallest ego I’ve ever seen in television business when he has a right to the largest one.”
“His audience believed him, and they trusted him. He set the bar for those who anchored newscasts across the country; he’ll always be remembered for that,” said Peter Mansbridge, former chief correspondent for and longtime friend of Robertson’s.
Throughout his career, he received numerous industry accolades including being inducted into the Order of Canada as an officer in 1997 and into the Canadian News Hall of Fame through the Canadian Journalism Foundation in 2016.
“If you find something that you love to do and you’re able to do it that’s about as good as it gets in life,” Robertson stated during a CTV documentary called And That’s the Life I Led released in 2012.
