We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Richard Stephen Porichuk, known as Rick to some and Choppers to many, on December 21, 2025 at the age of 75 at T. B. R. H. S. C., surrounded by his family after suffering a serious stroke.
Richard was born on November 16, 1950 in Fort William, the first child of Margaret and Steve Porichuk.
He grew up in the East End and went to Ogden Public School and Northwood High School. Richard loved hunting and fishing (especially for specs). In his later years, he became a passionate collector of sports memorabilia (go Detroit!). He also enjoyed trips to the Caribbean with his partner and had a fondness for casinos. Over the years, Richard was involved in or led various organizations, clubs, and events (too many to list).
He was a loving son, brother, uncle, and friend who showed kindness to everyone around him. He shared a special bond with his great nephew and niece, Kingston & Willow. His generosity extended well beyond just his family.
Richard worked for many years at Abitibi Mission mill in roles like blowpit operator, SCMP worker, and safety personnel until the mill closed. Not ready to retire yet, he then took on security jobs at several places before ending up at Max Pawn & Loans where he felt like part of the family.
He is predeceased by his parents Margaret and Steve along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends.
Richard leaves behind his partner Renate Evans of 30 years along with her extended family. He is also survived by brothers Robert (Donna) and Ronald (Patti), nephews Jason (Lindsay) who has Kingston & Willow as well as Justin (Samantha) from Maple Ridge, BC., aunt Mary Ann and many cousins.
We want to thank the caring staff in ICU and homecare workers who supported us throughout this journey. A special shout-out goes out to Richard’s closest friends-you know who you are-and we can’t express how grateful we are for your love and support for our brother Choppers.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held for family and friends on February 12, 2026 at the Slovak Legion from 1 to 4 PM. (Feel free to wear any type of Detroit apparel if you’d like).
In lieu of flowers or gifts, friends may honor Choppers’ memory with donations to any local pet rescue or shelter that they choose.
