Shannon Mary Ward had a kind heart, a passion for learning, and a life that took her to many places around the world. She was born in Madison, Wisconsin, on May 8, 1990, and grew up in Sudbury, Massachusetts. Shannon combined her love for music, art, and adventure with an eagerness to learn about languages and cultures far beyond her hometown.
As a child, Shannon enjoyed playing the cello, celebrating Halloween, watching Disney movies and reenacting them, as well as spending time with her family dog, Ruffy. She loved thrill rides like roller coasters and haunted houses. School came easily to her; during summer breaks she visited family in Canada and Minnesota where she hiked in Algonquin Park and waterskied on Lake Okanagan.
In high school, Shannon found a study-abroad program in India that led her to spend her last semester living in various cities across North and South India. That six-month journey changed everything for her. It was here that she developed a deep interest in learning languages-especially Tibetan language and culture.
Shannon later earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Wellesley College before pursuing a Ph D in Linguistic Anthropology at New York University under Bambi Schieffelin’s guidance. Her doctoral research involved extensive periods living in Dharamsala, India; Kathmandu, Nepal; and Xining, China. During this time she became part of the Tibetan communities she studied which enriched both her personal life and academic work. Her research focused on bilingual children whose first language is Amdo Tibetan and resulted not only in her dissertation but also in her book titled Amdo Lullaby by the University of Toronto Press in November 2024.
Right after completing her Ph D, Shannon landed a tenure-track faculty position at the University of British Columbia Okanagan as an Assistant Professor of Anthropology. She loved teaching students-especially those from other countries whom she helped navigate their educational paths while often assisting them with transitioning to life in Canada. Shannon collaborated broadly with colleagues worldwide; she presented at conferences from Norway to Hawaii while staying active with organizations like the American Anthropological Association and the Society for Linguistic Anthropology. In Vancouver, she built strong connections within the local Tibetan community which deepened both her research efforts and friendships.
Apart from academics, Shannon had a quiet creative side. She enjoyed coffee shops, yoga classes, art exhibits, music sessions along with spending time with her two cherished cats named Evie and Mei Mei. People will remember her as an insightful scholar who generously mentored others-a true friend with genuine inner beauty.
Shannon achieved remarkable professional milestones alongside battling lifelong struggles with anxiety and depression privately. In recent months these challenges became too much for her to bear. She passed away peacefully in Cambridge Massachusetts on September 9th 2025.
She will be greatly missed by everyone who cared about her including especially by her mother Kim; brother Brandon; sister-in-law Cathy; niece Alice; nephew Sam; along with numerous uncles aunties cousins spread throughout Canada USA.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Sunday November 2nd at 1:30 PM at Saint Matthews United Methodist Church located Acton Massachusetts where service livestream will be available recorded later too! Contributions can be made towards The Tibetan Culture Society BC or your local animal shelter
