Dr. Subhas Ramcharan passed away peacefully on September 30, 2025, at the age of 81, surrounded by his loving family. He was a devoted husband to Margaret (née Naimool) and a proud father to Adele (Carl) and Chantele (Olivier). He was predeceased by his beloved son Nigel in 2024 and is remembered fondly as a grandfather to Cassia, Keir, Noah, Cedric, and Solange.
Born in Claxton Bay, Trinidad to Mynee and Harry-who were descendants of indentured labourers from India-Suby was the second of three siblings: Ewart, Ingrid, and Rudy. He attended Presentation College in San Fernando before earning his B. A (Hons) in Sociology and History from the University of the West Indies. It was there that he met his future wife Margaret while biking around campus. They got married in 1967 and moved to Jamaica where Suby pursued a Master’s in Sociology and joined an active intellectual community. He stood up for academic freedom and social justice during the 1968 UWI student protests where he faced teargas. The couple then immigrated to Canada in 1969 so he could finish his Ph D in Sociology at York University.
In 1973, attracted by the promise of milder winters, he joined the University of Windsor as a professor. Over his impressive 40-year career, Dr. Ramcharan held several leadership positions including Head of Sociology and Anthropology Department as well as Ombudsperson and Race Relations Officer. Known for being opinionated and outspoken, he often challenged traditional views on race and power dynamics. His efforts earned him numerous accolades such as the Right Hon. Herb Gray Award for Racial Harmony along with the Award for Teaching Excellence; plus many publications like his influential book Racism: Non-Whites in Canada in 1982.
Dr. Ramcharan dedicated himself to improving Canadian society through various community services including work with organizations like the Multicultural Council of Windsor, United Way, Windsor Police Services Board, Ontario Human Rights Commission, Ontario Heritage Foundation, Ontario Historical Society, Canadian Mental Health Association, and Canadian Human Rights Tribunal. As an enthusiastic traveler representing Canada globally, he served as Head of Delegation for the Canadian Race Relations Foundation at the United Nations Conference on Racial Discrimination held in South Africa.
For an incredible 58 years together, Suby and Margaret shared a strong bond filled with love while enjoying laughter along with playful arguments that kept their connection vibrant. In Windsor they built friendships that felt like family among their community members. A lifelong learner with an easygoing nature; Suby was admired for his unique way of expressing himself combined with natural charm. As a devoted father who adored being a grandfather; he found joy telling “jumbie stories,” singing songs together or sharing memories from his own childhood with them all lovingly! Subhas Ramcharan will be remembered through those who loved him deeply-his family members alongside countless individuals influenced by his scholarship reflecting courage compassion wisdom throughout life.
At Dr. Ramcharan’s wish cremation has taken place already. A Memorial Visitation will occur at Windsor Chapel Funeral Home – Banwell Chapel , located at 11677 Tecumseh Rd. E.(519-253-7235), on Tuesday October14th ,2025 starting from11:00 am until Funeral Service begins at1:00 pm inside Chapel. Interment follows afterwards over at Heavenly Rest Cemetery.
