Ethel Rea was born into a farming family in Ballydavey, Co. Down, N. Ireland. She attended school in nearby Holywood and graduated from Sullivan Upper School where she loved playing sports like Field Hockey. After that, she trained as a nurse at the Belfast City Hospital and continued her Health Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University. In the UK, she mainly worked as a Health Visitor and Fieldwork Instructor in Belfast before moving to Canada to join the Public Health Unit in Peel Region.
A dedicated Christian, Ethel took on many roles in local churches across Ireland, N. Ireland, and Canada. At Bramalea Baptist Church, she became one of the first female deacons and was an active member for about 50 years. A talented singer who trained as a soprano in Belfast competitions met Tom Mc Master through music while he was preparing for ministry work. They married and had three children together; however, after Tom’s untimely death when he was still young Ethel raised their kids alone with strength that she often credited to God’s support during those challenging times.
Fourteen years after Tom’s passing, Ethel found love again with Fred Lane. Their marriage lasted for 27 happy years until Fred passed away too. Because of all she’s been through , Ethel led a Coping & Bereavement program along with a Seniors’ ministry for many years at Bramalea Baptist Church which resulted in lasting friendships.
Ethel had a genuine love for people , always inviting others into her home. Known for her cooking skills , she’d host dinner parties filled with tea , scones , laughter , and inevitably moments where she’d play piano encouraging everyone to sing hymns praising God. Her kind heart , generous nature , and unwavering strength will be remembered by all who knew her.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Ethel’s life at Bramalea Baptist Church located at 9050 Dixie Rd , Brampton , ON L6S 1J3 on Friday , May 29th , 2026 at 2:00 pm.
