Edward Arthur Lumley, affectionately called Ted by those close to him, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, in Blind River, Ontario. Born on July 7, 1936, in Sudbury, Ontario, Ted’s life was filled with meaningful relationships, varied interests, and a commitment to community service over his impressive 89 years.

Ted grew up in the lively city of Sudbury and attended Copper Cliff High School in Copper Cliff, Ontario. His education set the stage for a successful career that took him through various industries and locations. He started his professional journey at General Telephone in St. Petersburg, Florida, then moved on to Bell Telephone and INCO back in Sudbury. His entrepreneurial spirit emerged when he founded and ran Underwater Unlimited Dive Shop and Training Centre in Val Caron, Ontario. Later he opened Schoolhouse Printing on St. Joseph’s Island. Driven by his love for community news, he became the founder and owner of Island Clippings Newspaper-a publication that continues to support St. Joseph’s Island with dedication.

Ted had many interests that reflected his curious nature. During the 1960s and 1970s, he was an enthusiastic sportsman-captaining the St. Petersburg Stars Hockey team and driving stock car number 407 at Sunshine Speedway in St. Petersburg as both a mechanic and driver. His passion for the ocean led him to enjoy SCUBA diving while being an active member of both Dolphin Aquatic Club and Underwater Adventurers in Sudbury.

In his later years during his 60s onward, Ted discovered a love for motorcycles; he bought his first bike and joined Gold Wing Road Riders Association well into his 80s. His dedication to serving others was evident through three decades of active membership with Lions Clubs-starting with St. Joseph Island Lions before moving to Bruce Mines Lions club. As a third-generation Mason, Ted belonged to Algonquin Lodge as well as City of Lakes Lodge where he shared his knowledge and camaraderie.

Ted remained passionate about sports throughout his life as an avid follower of curling-especially cheering for Jacobs Rink-and rarely missed games featuring the Blue Jays or Sudbury Wolves. He was also known for storytelling; after family dinners he’d often share jokes or “stories” that left everyone smiling.

Ted is survived by his loving family: sister Ann Hurd (Ron), son Michael Lumley (Laurie), daughter Susan Lumley (Kyle), grandchildren Theresa Bloor (Guy), Craig Lumley (Karol), Joshua Lumley, Jessica Valade (Dan), Oliver Lumley-Pfeil, Madison Lumley-Pfeil , Libbie Lumley-Pfeil , along with great-grandchildren Sara Joyes , Makayla Joyes , Ethan Joyes , Luke Bloor , Syrus Lumley , Tryston Eveleigh. He will also be fondly remembered by nephew Steve Hurd (Lyndia), niece Sandee Wynn (Steve), plus many friends from the community whose lives were touched by him. Ted was predeceased by wives Julienne Lumley (nee Lavergne) , Viola Reed (nee Desjardins) , along with granddaughter Zoey Lumley-Pfeil.

People described Ted as interesting , friendly , intelligent. He leaves behind memories filled with love , laughter , service. While we mourn this loss deeply among all who knew him well enough – it’s clear that tales told around family gatherings will carry forth not just laughter but reminders about embracing passions connecting communities sharing joys found within good storytelling moments! He’ll be greatly missed.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks towards Dr. Raycraft staff working at Acute Care unit North Shore Health Network located within Blind River Ont., along management teams Light Haven Christian Home situated Bruce Mines Ont.

Following Ted’s wishes no formal funeral service will be held ; cremation has already occurred.

If desired please consider making donations directed towards Bruce Mines Lions Club honorably representing Ted’s memory or any charity you prefer instead.
