People from the Global South have long claimed that the so-called rules-based international order is more of a myth. They argue that it was only ever enforced selectively, with powerful nations calling the shots. Now, for the first time, a notable Western leader has officially recognized this reality.
In a striking address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney declared that even the ‘pretence’ of a rules-based order has ended, stating that this isn’t just a moment of change but rather a ‘rupture’.
Taking jabs at President Donald Trump’s use of tariffs as weapons, he noted that today’s definition of sovereignty is how well a nation can resist pressure from larger powers.
His remarks have struck a chord with many worldwide and are sparking discussions in strategic circles. But are his comments just interesting thoughts, or could they actually lead to meaningful outcomes? Should India consider adopting Carney’s perspective when engaging with major powers?
