Five siblings who lost their lives in a tragic accident in rural Ontario last week will be honored on Saturday, as family, friends, and community members come together to remember them.

Peter Doerksen, 12, Helena Doerksen, 10, Sara Doerksen, eight, Maggie Doerksen, six, and Susy Doerksen, four, passed away after a two-vehicle crash in Mapleton Township on June 12.

As stated in an obituary, visitation took place Friday at Wallenstein Bible Chapel in Wallenstein, Ont.

A funeral service is set for Saturday at 2 p. m., followed by burial at Morningview Gospel Cemetery in Milverton.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of five beloved children,” the obituary states.

The children are survived by their parents, Cornelius Doerksen Froese and Judit Doerksen, along with six siblings.

OPP reported that the children were part of 10 people inside a passenger van that collided with an SUV at the intersection of Wellington Road 12 and Fourth Line in Mapleton Township, northwest of Guelph.

Four adults and an infant who were also traveling in the van sustained serious injuries.

The driver of the SUV, a 42-year-old man from Brampton, died in the hospital on Tuesday due to injuries from the crash, OPP confirmed on Saturday.

A crowdfunding campaign launched after the accident featured remarks from the children’s sister Nancy Doerksen who described their family’s sorrow as “beyond words.”

“Our mom remains in the hospital suffering from multiple injuries, including injuries to her kidney, liver, gallbladder, broken ribs and pelvic bone along with extensive bruising and trauma,” she mentioned on the page.

“At this time we are unsure how long her recovery will take,” she added while noting that her father is recuperating at home while helping care for everyone.

The fundraiser aims to help cover funeral costs and other expenses as the family focuses on healing during this difficult time.

The weight of this tragedy has resonated throughout the nation.

“My thoughts are with the family and their loved ones as they face this horrific tragedy and with those in Elmira and Mapleton,” Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed on social media.
