May 18, 1941 – July 7, 2026

With heavy hearts, the family of Elgin Ratushniak shares the news of his passing on July 7th, 2026, at the Geraldton District Hospital, surrounded by loved ones.

Elgin was preceded in death by his parents, John and Sophie Ratushniak; his brother, Ron Ratushniak; his sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Walter Stelmachuk; and his dear daughters, Carrie-Lee Ratushniak and Chrissy Sullivan.

He is fondly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Bobbi; his son, Curtis (Line); his daughter, Penny; his son-in-law, Tom Sullivan; his granddaughter, Tiffany Sullivan; grandsons Justin Sullivan and Ricky Ratushniak; as well as several nieces, nephews, and many close friends.

Elgin’s family moved to Geraldton when he was a young boy, making it their home. It was here that he created a fulfilling life-marrying the love of his life, raising a family, building a successful career, and forming enduring friendships that meant so much to him.

Elgin often recounted the story of starting school. He only spoke Ukrainian at first but was fortunate that his first teacher shared this background. She taught lessons in English then translated them into Ukrainian for him. This experience stayed with him throughout his life.

After finishing Grade 8, Elgin left school to follow what would be a lifelong passion-cars. He started at Ball Motors where he honed his skills alongside seasoned mechanics. His knack for diagnosing car issues coupled with a strong work ethic earned him respect as an accomplished mechanic.

His calm demeanor and practical approach led him to later teach Automotive at Geraldton High School. For over two decades he shared what he knew with countless students about both the trade itself and the importance of hard work. Teaching brought him joy every single day.

In 2025 Elgin attended the Geraldton High School reunion where he had the chance to reconnect with many former students. Reuniting with them and hearing their stories became one of the best moments of that summer for him.

During retirement Elgin loved fishing trips with friends while reminiscing about past adventures on the water. He also had a strong appreciation for classic cars-often seen polishing up his cherished ‘53 Buick or revving up his ‘65 Meteor. He enjoyed participating in car shows across Northwestern Ontario where he connected with other enthusiasts who shared similar interests.

Elgin valued numerous lifelong friendships deeply. Whether sharing laughs over coffee or beer or lending support when needed-spending time with family and friends brought happiness into his life. He truly appreciated all those who were part of it.

He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will take place on August 1, 2026 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm at the Geraldton Legion.

If you have a classic car-polish it up and bring it along to honor Elgin’s memory.
