Mrs. Eeva Holopainen, age 87, a resident of Thunder Bay, passed away quietly in her sleep on Monday, March 9, 2026 at TBRHSC. Eeva was born in Kuopio, Finland in March 1938 and moved to Canada in 1960 to start a new life with her husband.
Eeva is survived by her husband of 68 years, Veijo. They met by chance while ice skating when they were just 12 years old. They got married at the young age of 19 in August 1957.
Eeva also leaves behind her daughter Rita (Dean) and son John (Carrie), along with her grandchildren Heather (Jason), Cathy (Cory), and Erik. She is survived by six great-grandchildren: Jordyn, Joshua, Suvi, Lilah, Serena, and Sadie, who all created their own special memories with Sauna Mummo.
Everyone felt welcome at her home or camp. There was always laughter mixed with sarcasm on the menu along with strong coffee, fresh pulla, and makkara. Mummo offered love and guidance across generations while sharing her own life experiences. She never judged anyone and accepted everyone as they were. She always extended support to those in need. It’s clear from how fondly Cathy’s and Heather’s childhood friends remember Mummo that she made a lasting impact on many lives.
The years spent in Longlac were quite busy for Eeva. She worked at Weldwood before becoming a self-employed cleaner whose services were highly sought after. Camping and fishing trips with family and friends brought her joy as did the many special friendships she formed in Longlac-especially with Ritva Torkko, Toini Halonen, and Armi Korhonen-friendships that continue today. I can just imagine mom up there laughing heartily with Ritva like they used to do whenever they got together; now they’re planning new adventures together.
Even during tough times or illnesses over the years, Eeva had this magical energy about her that inspired others. Her positive outlook always shone through as she believed that “this too shall pass” and taught others to look forward to better days ahead.
A Memorial Service for family and friends will be held on Thursday March 19 at 11:00am at Hilldale Lutheran Church. If desired, donations to Hilldale Lutheran Church would be appreciated instead of flowers.
Her laughter will always resonate in the hearts of those who knew her.
Äiti ja Mummo, rakastamme sinua.
