It is with deep sorrow that we share the news of the passing of The Honorable Dr. John Frederick Hamm from Stellarton on July 12, 2026, at the age of 88.
Born in New Glasgow, he was the son of Gerald and Irene Hamm, who have both passed away. John graduated from New Glasgow High School in 1955 and went on to earn degrees in Science at Kings College and Medicine at Dalhousie University. He practiced family medicine in Pictou County for over three decades.
John played an active role in Nova Scotia’s medical community. He served as President of the Aberdeen Hospital Medical Staff, President of the Pictou County Medical Society, Chair Executive and President of the Medical Society of Nova Scotia, council member and President of the College of Family Physicians of Nova Scotia, Member of the Medical Council of Canada and Provincial Medical Board, as well as Chair of the Aberdeen Hospital Foundation.
His contributions to family medicine were recognized across the province. He received the Medical Staff Prize at Victoria General Hospital (1963) and was honored with an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (2014).
In addition to his medical career, John sat on numerous boards. He was part of the Steering Committee for Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation through Canadian Blood Services, a member of the National Board for Early Childhood Development, Chairman at Kings College (2007-2013), Chairman for the Assisted Human Reproductive Agency of Canada, and Chairman for Northern Resources.
John also had a passion for politics. He served as MLA for Pictou Center (1993-2006), Leader of the PC Party in NS (1995-2006), Leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition (1995-1998), Leader of Third Party (1998-1999), and Premier of Nova Scotia from 1999 to 2006.
A former 2nd Lieutenant in Canadian Army Infantry, he was named Honorary Colonel for the 1st Battalion, The Nova Scotia Highlanders in 2014.
His commitment extended into his local community as well. He was President of the New Glasgow Rangers Hockey Team and Warden at St. George’s Church. Additionally, he participated on various boards within local organizations such as Sobey Art Foundation; he was Honorary Chair for Big Brothers Big Sisters Pictou County (2010), Chair for the 50th Anniversary Celebration for Pictou County United Appeal, along with co-Chairing financial campaigns for Pictou County Wellness Center.
Thanks to his work in both medicine and politics throughout his life, he earned several accolades including a Lifetime Achievement Award (2009) alongside an Annual Leadership award (2000) from New England – Canada Business Counsel; a Lifetime Achievement Award from Pictou County Chamber Commerce (2016); Judge J. Elliot Hudson Distinguished Alumnus Award from Kings College (2006); Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal (2002); Honorary Member status within Executive Council Nova Scotia (2007); Award Excellence given by French Language Service Champion (2009); an Honorary Diploma conferred by Nova Scotia Community College(2009); Officer designation within Order Canada awarded in 2010; Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal(2012)and finally an Honorary Doctorate Degree granted by The University Of Kings College In Civil Law(2014).
John is survived by his wife Genesta with whom he shared 63 years; three children – John(Wendy), Jeffrey , and Jennifer(Jim); plus seven grandchildren – Liam , Sara , Megan , Emily , John Luke , Genesta Lee, and Gregor.
He was predeceased by his parents Irene(Cameron)and Gerald Hamm; along with sister Geraldine.
Cremation has taken place with plans for a private family burial later on.
