With heavy hearts, we share the news of Donald Steve Kachkowski’s passing on August 7th, 2026, at the age of 73. Don was born in Fort William (Thunder Bay) on February 11, 1953 to Anna and Steve Kachkowski. As the youngest of four siblings, he was dearly loved by his sisters.

He attended Crawford Elementary School, Westgate High School, Lakehead University, and Confederation College.

In the 70’s, Don began his career as a firefighter for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. He later became an Environmental Officer with the Ministry of the Environment and continued working there until he retired in 2010.

During retirement, Don dedicated his time to all his favorite activities throughout the year. He particularly enjoyed fishing and spending quality moments with family, friends, and neighbors at his camp on Savoy Lake as well as with Andrew on Lake Superior.

His love for hunting and fishing extended far beyond local waters, leading him to numerous adventures worldwide.

Don was a long-time member of the Thunder Bay Trap and Skeet Club. His team claimed multiple League Championships over the years. He cherished shooting sessions with his son Christian followed by drinks with their friends and fellow shooters at the Stanley Tavern.

An avid bridge player during university days, Don picked it up again after retirement.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Steve Kachkowski, along with his nephew Steven Kachkowski.

Don is survived by his wife Liza of 39 years; sons Andrew and Christian (Renee); along with their beloved black Lab named Colt.

His brother Ron Kachkowski (June), sisters Marie Schaaf and Shirley (Jonas) Slanisky along with their children and grandchildren also survive him.

We extend our gratitude to all friends who visited regularly or sent prayers and messages for Don and our family over these past four months. Don bravely faced being diagnosed and treated for brain cancer-primary CNS non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday August 16 from 1-4pm at Westfort Prosvita located at 721 Gore Street West. There will be food, drinks, photos shared, and memories recounted.

In place of flowers or donations, please enjoy nature with friends or family while raising a cold beer or two in honor of him.

Tight lines, straight shooting
