January 5, 1952 – December 31, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that the family of Don Moir shares the news of his sudden passing just days before he would have turned 74. Born in 1952, he was the oldest son of Fred Sr. and Mary Moir. He went to Balsam Public School and Hillcrest High School. Don began his career at Dominion Stores before attending Sault Ste. Marie College to study art. Eventually, he returned to the grocery field working at A& P and then Safeway. He wrapped up his working life at FRP Manufacturing. Self-taught on guitar from a young age, Don joined various local music groups like the Jolly Ramblers and Reflections, performing at different venues throughout Thunder Bay. He also sang in the Fort William Male Choir for a time. Don was preceded in death by his father Fred Sr., sister Irene, brother Fred Jr., and brother-in-law Terry who was also a close friend. He is survived by his mother Mary, brothers Gord (Gislaine), David (Jackie), Douglas, and sister Anita. Many nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces will miss his playful “dad” jokes and joyful spirit. He cherished time spent with niece Samantha and her family where they enjoyed great meals and games together. It was common for Don to engage in army games with the boys or play Barbies with his special great-niece Kaitlyn-he often remarked on how much richer his life could have been if he had a daughter like her. He frequently praised Samantha’s children (Kristin, Colton, Kaitlyn, and Cameron) for their talents and admired what a wonderful mother she was to them. Don valued his friendship with Tim whom he met over three decades ago deeply. The passing of loved ones weighed heavily on him; however, he found comfort reconnecting with cousin Leo where they spent time studying the Bible together leading up to their baptism as Jehovah’s Witnesses earlier this year.
On Saturday, January 24th, 2026 at 1:00 p. m., a service honoring Don will take place at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses located at 1034 Oliver Road with David Alander officiating. For those wishing to join virtually can connect via Zoom ID 85443667724 using password: Unified. Refreshments will follow.
The family plans to hold an informal Celebration of Life for Don during the summer when out-of-town friends can travel more easily due to better weather conditions; details will be shared closer to that date. Friends wishing to honor him are encouraged to consider making a donation in lieu of flowers to either the Centre for Complex Diabetes Care (Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre), Diabetes Health (St Joseph’s Care Group), or any charity of your choice.
