Bernard Ernest Malanych passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of January 1, 2026. He had enjoyed good health since celebrating his 80th birthday in May 2025.
He is survived by his son, Jason Malanych (partner M. Mars); sister, Shirley Malanych from Toronto; nieces, Leslyann Komljenovic and Jessalyn Leakey of Campbell River; and his longtime friend and partner, Joanne Mc Macken of Thunder Bay – they shared many ups and downs together, especially as Bernard took on the role of full-time caretaker while Joanne faced a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.
Bernard is predeceased by his mother, Teeny Malanych; his former wife and Jason’s mother, Anne Vibert; and his brother, Satch Malanych.
Born in Fort William, Ontario, Bernie spent most of his life in Thunder Bay but also lived briefly in Vancouver and Toronto during his younger years. He attended local schools including all three high schools before graduating from Westgate. His summers were filled with basketball at Dease Park, while winters saw him playing organized hockey alongside childhood best friend Ralph Dahlin and adult friend Brian Babichuk.
Bernard graduated from Cambrian College with a diploma in Architectural Drafting. He was an artist at heart with friends across various interests. Known for his sign-painting skills and handyman services, he was also an excellent cook and enthusiastic gardener who enjoyed being part of a long-standing supper club with friends. In middle age, he took up long-distance running which helped him stay healthy.
One of Bernard’s greatest loves was stock car racing! He relished being part of the pit crew for various racing teams in Thunder Bay as well as those that raced across the border.
In later years, he enjoyed relaxing on the couch watching NASCAR on Sunday afternoons and walking his beloved dog Jiba along with Joanne and her dog Cohen.
A Celebration of Life will take place in Thunder Bay during Spring or Summer 2026 when the weather warms up.
