An 8-year-old girl, who was hit and killed by an SUV in Oakville one week ago, has been named Melody Xu.

“There’s just no words,” said Anna Lopez, a close friend of the Xu family.

Lopez mentions it’s hard to accept that her daughter won’t have another play date with Melody.

The girls have been friends since junior kindergarten and attended St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Elementary School in Oakville.

“It’s a huge shock. We just saw her,” Lopez said through tears.

“Any family would think, ‘I need to give my child a tighter hug tonight,’” Lopez said.

Lopez adds she’s helping Melody’s father however possible while her mom is recovering in the hospital.

“He’s been really strong because he has no choice but to be. They have a young son who he also needs to care for,” she explained.

A 47-year-old man from Oakville has been arrested and charged with dangerous driving causing death.

A memorial for Melody at the crash site has grown over recent days as people have left flowers, stuffed animals, and a sign that reads “Please slow down.”

“She’s always so bubbly; she was always so positive; she’s always so sweet-especially towards her younger brother,” Lopez shared.

“Such a good kid. She loves hockey; she loves piano; she loves being outdoors.”

Melody played for the U9 Oakville Hornets.

The team expressed their condolences on Instagram asking community members to honor Melody by placing hockey sticks outside their homes.

“Let’s fill our neighborhoods with sticks for Melody-a symbol of the joy she brought to the game and everyone who knew her,” stated their post.

Lopez mentioned it has been heartwarming to see so many people-including strangers-pay tribute to Melody.

“You really can’t help but feel your spirits lifted a little bit because the support is so immense,” she reflected.

Lopez started a Go Fund Me page for the family to assist with funeral costs and medical bills for Mom. It has already gathered more than $200,000.

“Just nothing short of being grateful,” Lopez added.

“We’re just hoping we can honor her and live up to her memory as best as we can.”
