A police chief in Ontario is calling for stronger measures to keep repeat offenders behind bars after a man with a lengthy criminal history was arrested following a violent home invasion in Oakville.

According to Halton police, just before 5 a. m. on November 30, three individuals broke into a residence on Greeneagle Drive in the Glen Abbey neighborhood and confronted the homeowner, demanding the keys to the vehicles parked outside while “punching him multiple times.”

One of the suspects allegedly had a handgun.

Officers arrived at the scene and managed to apprehend one suspect after a brief chase.

The homeowner sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital but has since been released, as per police reports. Stolen items were recovered later, and none of the vehicles were taken.

However, police did not find the handgun that was reportedly used during the incident.

Cleveland Van Every, a 23-year-old from Ohsweken, Ontario, faces several charges including robbery with a firearm, breaking and entering, failing to comply with a release order, and possessing a weapon despite being prohibited from doing so.

HRPS Chief Steve Tanner expressed his frustration regarding this situation in a statement and noted that there have been too many reported home invasions in Halton region. He pointed out that this suspect was already out on bail related to theft charges from Niagara region and wasn’t allowed to carry any weapons.

“I can only imagine the fear that was felt by the victim and his family when three armed men broke into their home at 5 a. m. and assaulted him, causing injuries, including a broken nose. Thankfully, the quick response of our front-line officers resulted in the arrest of one of the suspects near the scene,” Tanner said.

“Violent home invasions have occurred too frequently in Halton and across the GTA this year – often for the keys to valuable motor vehicles. In this particular case, I am appalled that the individual we arrested and who is now charged with [multiple offences] committed yet another violent offence. It’s worth noting that the weapons prohibition order is in place because he was previously convicted of possessing a firearm.”

Tanner further mentioned that Van Every has previous convictions for various offenses including possession of firearms, vehicle thefts, breaking and entering incidents, assault with weapons, arson charges, and violating prior release orders.

“Our citizens should not have their personal safety and security threatened by violent repeat offenders who are out on bail while ignoring court orders,” Tanner stated.

“Yet these same violent offenders continue to be released only to victimize more people through ongoing acts of extreme violence. These types of offenders should remain in custody until trial and face significant jail time if convicted.”

The recent charges against Van Every are still awaiting validation in court.

The police are also searching for another suspect described as male with a heavy build last seen wearing dark clothing along with a black mask or balaclava. A second suspect is noted as male with a thin build dressed in light-colored clothes paired with a black mask.

If anyone has information regarding this investigation they are encouraged to reach out to the 2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4777 ext. 2216.
