A staff sergeant from the Ottawa Police Service has been charged with assault following an incident that took place while he was off duty in Oakville.
The OPS announced in a news release that Walt Lushman was charged by the Halton Regional Police Service after an alleged argument concerning a two-car crash on the night of June 12.
After being charged, Lushman was released from custody with certain conditions, according to the OPS release, which also noted that Halton police are continuing their investigation.
Additionally, the OPS Professional Standards Unit has begun its own investigation under the Community Safety and Policing Act.
While this situation is being looked into, Lushman will not have any public-facing responsibilities, stated OPS.
“The OPS holds all officers to a high standard of conduct, both on and off duty, and expects their actions to reflect the trust and values of the community we serve,” the statement added.
According to Ontario’s “Sunshine List” detailing public-sector salaries, Lushman received just over $200,000 in salary and benefits in 2025.
