One of Ontario’s most charming downtowns is gearing up for a significant makeover, with an eagerly awaited public square improvement getting underway in a way that keeps the area open, lively and fully accessible during construction.
Oakville town council has given the green light to a step-by-step plan for the $6.5-million Towne Square Revitalization Project, which aims to modernize a 35-year-old public space while allowing daily life in the downtown core to continue seamlessly throughout construction.
Famed for its lakeside view, historic main street and walkable streets filled with boutiques, downtown Oakville is often seen as one of the province’s most beautiful urban areas. The revamped Towne Square is expected to bolster this reputation while enhancing its role as a year-round center for events, gatherings and local businesses.
Construction is tentatively set to kick off in early fall 2026 and last until late 2027. Work will be carried out in phases, with town officials stressing a “keep it open” strategy so that businesses, residents and visitors can still access downtown during the project.
The project plan was developed through extensive discussions with local businesses, the Downtown Oakville BIA, community partners and residents-especially after pausing in 2025 to gather more input.
Mayor Rob Burton mentioned that this approach reflects what community members expressed during consultations.
“When Towne Square is complete, it will be a defining milestone for downtown Oakville,” Burton said. “The phased construction plan approved by council reflects what our community asked for: keep the downtown open, stay connected, and keep moving forward.”
Town officials assured that businesses and residences will remain accessible during construction, with only occasional short-term closures arranged directly with those impacted. Key infrastructure like underground parking, elevators and internal building access will still be available.
To help maintain visibility and customer access, decorative hoarding and improved wayfinding signage will be put up to direct visitors towards open shops and restaurants.
Additional measures include controlling dust and noise levels, limiting extended work hours, and moving staging areas away from busy spots to ease congestion.
Officials also stated they’ll strive to ensure that downtown events carry on during construction. George Street will act as a temporary event venue for community programming including the annual Holiday Tree Lighting among other Downtown Oakville BIA activities.
The redesigned Towne Square will boast expanded seating options, better accessibility features, a larger central lawn area, improved lighting conditions, upgraded paving materials along with new tree plantings providing shade and comfort. A signature water feature will connect the square with Lakeshore Road’s streetscape.
Design improvements also prioritize accessibility and safety aspects like smoother grade transitions; clearer pedestrian pathways; plus enhanced visual contrast in paving materials.
Town staff refer to Towne Square as a legacy initiative for the community highlighting how it’s been at the cultural heart of downtown for over thirty years while remaining vital to long-term growth plans of the town.
