How does this work?

The City of Oakville is making it harder for autos to be taken away by tow truck operators.

A sequence of strikes by the city will probit the towing of autos with out the car proprietor’s consent from each private and non-private land in Oakville, together with parking heaps, until the towing follows the foundations of native bylaws or the Province of Ontario’s Trespass to Property Act.

The brand new guidelines will come into impact on Feb. 28, 2025.

Below the brand new bylaw, solely City of Oakville enforcement employees, municipal regulation enforcement officers (MLEO) appointed by the city, or cops might organize for the towing or impounding of a car with out the consent of the car’s proprietor.

Earlier than a tow could be carried out, a penalty discover should first be issued, adopted by a compulsory half-hour ready interval. The ready interval is meant to discourage predatory and/or fraudulent towing practices.

Non-public car parking zone house owners can register with the City of Oakville to request parking enforcement by officers.

Exceptions to the half-hour ready interval embody emergency conditions and autos which can be:

Parked, stopped, standing, or left in signed hearth routes
In building zones
Interfering with snow-clearing operations on municipal land
In designated accessible parking areas
Blocking a laneway, loading docks, ingress and/or egress factors, or driveway entry; or
On municipal rights-of-way or on municipal land for neighborhood or particular occasions.

Alternatively, a property proprietor might use the Trespass to Property Act to tow autos.

Oakville will assessment the effectiveness of the brand new guidelines after one yr.
