A young boy has lost his life, and his father, who was driving, is in critical condition at the hospital following a rollover accident involving their vehicle on the westbound QEW near Bronte Road.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported that they received a call about the incident around 2 a. m. on Monday. The vehicle had three people inside, with the child suffering severe injuries.

A police representative confirmed to 680 News Radio that the boy, just nine years old, later passed away in the hospital. The 38-year-old driver initially sustained minor injuries but is now critically injured.

According to OPP Const. Timothy Dunnah speaking with City News, the driver is the boy’s father and they were returning home from a fishing trip.

Dunnah also mentioned that there was a third passenger in the vehicle, a 28-year-old man related to both the father and son, who did not sustain any injuries. They had been traveling for several hours before this unfortunate single-vehicle accident occurred.

The family resides in Hamilton, as confirmed by Dunnah. Provincial police have stated that no charges have been filed regarding this crash.

Westbound QEW at Bronte Road Reopens After Long Closure

Dunnah informed City News that it seems the driver fell asleep at the wheel, causing their pickup truck to veer off the highway and roll over multiple times before landing in a ditch.

Provincial police told 680 News Radio that it appears neither the driver nor the boy were wearing seatbelts during the crash; however, the other passenger was buckled up. It was also noted that due to this collision, the boy was thrown from the truck.

City News confirmed an off-duty nurse arrived first on scene and provided life-saving assistance to the boy.

The westbound lanes of QEW near Bronte Road were closed for six hours and reopened at 5:30 a. m.
