A woman in her 20s has passed away after being hit by a vehicle in Mississauga, according to Peel police.
Officers arrived at the scene of the collision around 11:20 p. m. Saturday near Queensway and Hurontario street, said Sgt. Taylor Halfyard during a news conference on Sunday.
The woman was taken to a local trauma centre, but unfortunately later succumbed to her injuries, he stated.
Halfyard mentioned that the woman was jaywalking across the road heading north when she fell off the mid-block median into westbound traffic. A vehicle then struck her at that moment, he explained.
The driver initially fled the scene but returned about eight minutes later and was arrested for failing to remain at a collision resulting in bodily harm. That charge was upgraded to failure to remain resulting in death after the woman passed away, according to Halfyard.
The driver has been released without conditions for now while police look into whether it was an accident or if there was “criminal intent” involved in the incident.
Halfyard encouraged anyone who witnessed what happened or has dashcam footage to reach out to investigators.
