Officers in Northern Ontario are keeping an eye out not just for impaired drivers on the roads, but they’re also taking a strict stance against those who ride snowmobiles while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs.

The North Bay Ontario Provincial Police reported that a 31-year-old man from Mississauga was charged after being stopped while driving a snowmobile at approximately 5:30 p. m. on Sunday, as he traveled across the icy and snowy surface of Lake Nipissing.

Authorities indicated that the snowmobile operator was suspected of having been drinking and was subsequently arrested for further evaluation at the police station.

The individual from Mississauga faces charges for operating while impaired due to alcohol. He has since been released and is expected to appear in court in North Bay on February 17, according to police.

In addition, the accused received a suspension of his driver’s license for 90 days.

The OPP mentioned their officers are “actively patrolling Lake Nipissing and surrounding waterways throughout the winter” and that “no amount of alcohol or drugs is acceptable when operating a snowmobile or any vehicle on ice.”
