A tremor was detected just before 11 p. m. tonight (Jan. 27).

Multiple earthquake monitoring stations report that the epicenter was near Orillia, close to Casino Rama, about 140 km north of Toronto.

The reported magnitude of the quake varies by source, with some measuring it at 3.7 and others as high as 4.6.

On the scale, a reading of 4.0 can usually be felt but tends to cause only minor damage. While there’s no upper limit on this scale, quakes measuring 8.0 or higher can lead to severe destruction.

So far, there have been no reports of any damage, but various social media users noted that shaking was felt in areas like south Mississauga, Peterborough, Whitby, and several smaller towns east and south of the epicenter. Residents in Rochester, N. Y., also mentioned they felt the vibrations.

“Did anyone else just feel that?” wrote one person on a community Facebook page in Mississauga. The commenter stated they live in Lakeview.

Others from Toronto shared that their homes shook for several seconds.

“I thought it was a snowplow going by, but when I looked out the window, there was no snowplow,” commented another user on Facebook.

Do you think it is worth $21 a year per household for plows to clear snow at the end of driveways?
