Cleanup operations are ongoing throughout Mississauga on Friday after the city and surrounding areas of the Greater Toronto Area faced a massive snowfall on Thursday, marking the biggest storm of this winter.

While Toronto Pearson Airport saw 22 centimetres of snow on January 15, other locations in Mississauga received between 30 to 40 centimetres during this recent storm.

Early Thursday morning, the City of Mississauga announced a “significant weather event” as snow accumulated across the city.

The snowstorm arrived in southern Ontario late Wednesday night into Thursday and rapidly covered the GTA, resulting in school closures and over 400 accidents on local highways, according to Ontario Provincial Police.

Crews made significant headway overnight across all surfaces, and cleanup efforts will persist today. Multiple passes have been made on sidewalks and bus stops since yesterday, with equipment back out again today to ensure they are safe and accessible.

The City of Mississauga reported that its snowplows and winter maintenance vehicles were active throughout Thursday and into Friday morning – completing several rounds of cleanup.

Officials stated that cleanup continued throughout Friday to keep roads clear and ensure that sidewalks and bus stops remain “safe and passable.”

The weather forecast suggests there may be another five centimetres of snow in Mississauga by the end of Friday.

As cleaning efforts carry on, city officials announced that a winter parking restriction implemented citywide early Thursday morning was lifted at 1:30 p. m. on Friday.

This measure, introduced this winter in the city, meant all street parking (including for those with temporary or monthly permits) was suspended until further notice except where street signs “explicitly permit parking.”

Today is an incredible test of sidewalk plows and windrow clearing at curbs of driveways. 40cm in one day is quite a challenge. Many could work from home. The restriction aims to keep roadways clear so snowplows can do their job quickly and thoroughly. Those who leave their cars parked on the street may face a new fine of $150.
