A man lost his life during a confrontation with police in Mississauga early Saturday morning.

As reported by Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), a woman called the police around 12:30 a. m. to report an incident related to domestic issues and informed officers that her husband had left the house with a firearm.

Not long after, Peel Regional Police located the suspect and approached him in a neighborhood between Fifth Line and Erin Mills Parkway, close to Dundas Street West.

The SIU stated that there was a brief foot chase, which led to an exchange of gunfire.

Four officers fired their weapons, according to an SIU spokesperson. The suspect was hit several times and declared dead at the scene.

Officials mentioned that the man was known to law enforcement, and multiple firearms were found at the location. It is believed that one gun was used in the shootout while another was reportedly discarded by the suspect further down the road.

Authorities confirmed that the man did not have a license for any firearms.

The SIU is an independent agency of the government responsible for investigating incidents involving police conduct that may lead to death, serious injuries, sexual assault, or firearm discharge at individuals.
