A 75-year-old man has lost his life and another driver is hospitalized following a two-car accident in Markham. Authorities believe that blowing snow may have contributed to the incident.

A 75-year-old man died after a two-vehicle collision in Markham on Thursday morning.

York Regional Police (YRP) reported that the crash occurred around 11 a. m. on Ninth Line between Elgin Mills Road East and 19th Avenue.

YRP Staff Sgt. Peter Cheung told reporters that emergency responders found one driver unresponsive and rushed him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Cheung mentioned that the other driver, a 23-year-old, was taken to a Toronto hospital with serious injuries.

“It appears to be a head-on collision at this point,” Cheung said.

Markham collision A police cruiser has blocked the road on Ninth Line in Markham following a fatal collision on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2026.

He pointed out that a York Region paramedic was driving behind one of the vehicles when the accident occurred.

“We need to speak to her. She was the one who transported one of the drivers to Markham Stouffville Hospital,” Cheung said.

The cause of the crash remains unclear, and police will investigate if road conditions were a factor.

“The road condition was plowed. It’s not too bad when I was coming here, but I cannot tell you what it was like when the accident happened,” Cheung said.
