A child is currently in critical condition following a house fire in Markham, Ont., on Friday, according to York Regional Police.

Emergency crews arrived at the location around 12:02 p. m. near 16th Avenue and 9th Line, police mentioned on social media.

Initially, authorities reported that everyone had safely evacuated the home without any injuries. However, they later shared an update indicating that a child was discovered by firefighters as they were clearing the area.

The child was transported to the hospital in life-threatening condition, police said.

Officials are investigating what caused the fire and evaluating the damage to the property, stated Jim Demetriou with the Office of the Fire Marshal during a press conference.

He added there are no further updates regarding the child’s status or details about the investigation at this time.

Police also noted that roads around the area are closed off.
